ASGB deliver the first 3D Outside Broadcast Trailer into China for WZTV.

Jan 31, 2014

December 2013 saw the PDI and customer acceptance of a two axle semi-trailer OB van destined for Wenzhou TV (WZTV) via Sony China. WZTV are state television broadcaster in the South East Chinese province of Zhejiang and take delivery of the very first 3D capable truck to be delivered into China.

The 13m length and 30 tonne capacity of the trailer chassis combined with rear steering axle gives the OB van a substantial equipment carrying capacity and yet it remains highly manoeuvrable.

Manufactured with a single expanding side of 12.3m by 1.5m, the engineering involved in creating the large Engineering and Production areas was a challenge to ASGB designers. Additionally, the truck is designed with internal doors that slide into the bulkheads to provide partitioned working areas if required.

The larger footprint allowed a 3-rack bay secondary Production area, a 3-bay VTR rack space and a 5-bay Convergence 3D puller desk to be installed in addition to the usual Engineering rack and Production desk capacity.

The expanding side is manufactured as a complete roof over type expander, so the head room in the expanding side is improved compared to that of a conventional expanding side construction. The space saving rear end design incorporates 11 triax cable reels plus a 2-bay patch panel and rear power bay access despite stowing the external expanding side over the top.

A unique step solution whereby the steps slide to enable space saving stowage but maintain maximum locker capacity and ease of access have been developed specifically for this project.

The trailer is fitted with 60kW of air-conditioning plant which is sized to operate at ambient temperatures between -5 °C and 45 °C.

As part of the total ASGB one-stop solution, the Chinese MAN tractor cab was fitted with an air kit, skirts and emergency lights, with the whole trailer and cab finished off with a combination of high quality painted graphics and vinyl logos.

The vehicle will weigh 26 tonnes after installation of the broadcasting equipment and is capable of operating 15 cameras.
